5-HTP known as 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan is a compound created in the body which is used to regulate serotonin levels in brain and central nervous system. Serotonin is an important brain chemical involved in mood, behavior, appetite, and sleep. When the walls of blood vessels are damaged, serotonin is released from the platelets to constrict the blood vessel and prevent hemorrhage, or you can say 5-HTP helps improve moods of depressed patients and may aid in weight loss, improve sleep patterns and help panic attacks. When considering 5-HTP or any "natural" supplement, it is important that we consider that they have the potential to affect our bodies as much as any other drug, particularly if we are taking other prescription or over-the-counter drugs. Since dietary and herbal supplements don't come under the same scrutiny and testing as drugs, there have not been the same studies conducted to prove their effectiveness or their safety.  Origination of Medication :

5-HTP is a substance that is naturally produced in the body.  Effectiveness of 5-HTP :

Experts suggest that 5-HTP when combined with a healthy diet and an exercise program can have dramatic effects on blood pressure. This may ultimately lead to lowering the risk of heart disease however; there is no known study which proves consumption of 5-HTP lowers the cases of heart disease. In Many medical articles, it was stated that 5-HTP as effective in reducing symptoms by reducing the occurrence of Panic Disorder. However, in the initial stage of the test actually showed an increase of anxiety in 40% of the patients. These levels of anxiety decreased after the first section of the test.

 

 5-HTP dosage :

Some sources suggest that 5 HTP can be safely used as a nutritional supplement at a dosage of up to 100 milligrams (mg) per day. Some authorities maintain that much larger dosages can be consumed without adverse effects. Some also suggest that 5 HTP, especially in larger doses should be used with the prescription drug carbidopa. The purpose of this drug is to prevent the 5 HTP from being converted to serotonin in the peripheral circulation.

5-HTP should not be taken with Carbidopa, which is used to treat Parkinson’s disease; triptans such as Imitrex, Zomig, Maxalt, or Amerge; and some other prescription medications.
